Gold Hill, Shaftesbury limited edition wood engraving
We fell in love with this wood engraving of Gold Hill by Kath Littler as soon as we saw it. While the traditional view is the one seen from the top of the hill with the cottages tumbling down to the left of the cobbles, Kath has captured our town's most famous landmark from a completely different angle, perhaps from somewhere along Great Lane. The detail is brilliant in its intricacy, from the people on the cobbles to the stair turret on the tower of Trinity Church.
Mounted, unframed wood engraving.
Titled, signed and numbered, limited edition of 75.
Artwork size: 65 x 65mm

Keeping it local
Kath Littler worked as an art teacher and practising painter in various media throughout her career. After moving to Dorset in 1992, she became interested in printmaking and was a member of Poole Printmakers for many years. Then, in 2003, she re-met her lecturer from college, Peter Reddick, a prominent wood engraver and book illustrator. His beautifully-skilled engravings with their fluid rhythms and black and white contrast expressing drama in nature inspired her to take up the medium.
Much of Kath's subject matter derives from the beauty of the landscape and coast. She prints her wood engravings by hand on a Victorian press and is a member of the Society of Wood Engravers, with whom she exhibits regularly.
